Drilling in ANWR

Oh, look. It’s another example of how world-changing liberal politicians are these days….

But wait…there’s more! Apparently Pelosi isn’t the only kid on the block with this radical, planet-saving mindset.

I’m confused.  We bought Alaska in 1959.  It was originally dubbed “Seward’s Folley” because of the assumption (at the time) that there was no natural resouces there.  Consider this quote from the New York Tribune, The New York World said that it was a “sucked orange.” It contained nothing of value but furbearing animals, and these had been hunted until they were nearly extinct. Except for the Aleutian Islands and a narrow strip of land extending along the southern coast the country would be not worth taking as a gift…. Unless gold were f

ound in the country much time would elapse before it would be blessed with Hoe printing presses, Methodist chapels and a metropolitan police. It was ‘a frozen wilderness’” ~ Horace Greeley, New York Tribune- 1867

Now, don’t get me wrong; I realize that Alaska has turned out to be far more than we ever imagined back then.  My point is this; the US did not buy Alaska so that we could own a wildlife reserve.  We bought Alaska in hopes of finding natural resources…and we have.  We were expecting gold, if anything.  What we found is just as valuable, yet we can’t harvest it.  We can’t, because we’re trying to “protect the environment”.  Let me tell you something…if anyone researched ANWR (Artic National Wildlife Refuge) and, more specifically, the 10-02 area (where we’d be drilling), they would have their eyes opened.  If they saw the extreme smallness of the proposed drilling areas compared to the size of the reserve (2,000 acres for drilling, out of 20 million acres of reserve) they would be shocked, and probably feel lied to by the media (there’s a shocker) and deceived by their politicians.  Because what Pelosi and Obama and Gore and every other environmentalist/politician/martyr doesn’t want you to know is that the area the we want to drill in, this tiny, oil-laden section of Alaska, is nothing but “artic desert”.  Go check out www.ANWR.org for photos, info, and more.

Can you imagine? If we get even more liberals into the Congress, White House, ect…maybe we can restrict the harvest of even more of our natural resources!

Now, I will grace you all with my opinion about all of this.  The whole situation actually sickens me, because… these environmentalists/politicians/martyrs do not, I repeat, DO NOT ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT!

You may be thinking, “Well, Of course they do, you big, conservative, anti-earth jerk” Well, my friend, that’s where you’d be naive. See, they want to drill. Oh, they want to all right. But not now. Not while there’s any speck of a chance that any of the credit could go to our republican president. If the public got wind of anything good happening while Bush was still in office, the chance of Barack Obama getting into the White House would plummet.  It’s my opinion that the main reason for Obama’s success if not out of a like for him as much as it is out of a undeserved and ignorance-induced dislike for the President.  So, they hold off on drilling and let the ill-informed public blame the republicans for soaring gas prices. Never mind that the President and many other republican politicians have been attempting to squeeze a drilling bill through our oh-so-liberal congress for years now.

Thank you, Readers, for…well…reading.  Until next time!

  1. Just a small clarification. Alaska was acquired as a territory in 1867 (by Sec of State Wm Seward under Andrew Johnson) from Russia, who was very willing to sell. Statehood ensued in 1959. Seward was very much an expansionist (“manifest destiny”), but as you indicate, he must have sensed the potential of the $7.2M purchase that others at the time were blind to.

  2. Aha. Thanks for the clarifier :-) And thanks for stopping by!
